A great book will transport you to another world... literally, if you're not careful. On a gloomy Thursday afternoon, Max Bloom enters his local library in a last-ditch attempt to stave off an epic case of teenage boredom. Among the hushed stacks he discovers The Cornerstone, an ancient book tucked away on a dusty, forgotten shelf.
Opening the cover, Max is instantly transported to an alternate dimension full of things intent on killing him - thus avoiding boredom with remarkable success. He meets a beautiful girl called Merelie (brilliant), who tells him he could be a Wordsmith, a sorcerer able to craft magic from the written word itself, one strong enough to save both their worlds from the Dwellers - hideous monsters from beyond the universe (not so brilliant).
In a world threatened by monsters, where books are worshipped and powerful magic exists, Max Bloom must make a choice: close The Cornerstone and run home - or trust Merelie, become a Wordsmith, and save two worlds from certain destruction....

Good damn read.
By Andy H
Highly enjoyable book. Am really looking forward to a follow up - it always disappoints me when i get to the end of a book and instead of a link to the next one i see a 'Coming soon'. Keep up the good work Nick.

Typical teen
By S. L. Montag
The book extols the importance of books to a society (something we seem to have forgotten in this electronic age), It also has a teenage hero who is typically bored, with nothing to do. The last place he considers going is the library, but when he does, it's a life-changing experience. Only reluctantly does our wise-cracking teen take up the mantle of being the hero he's meant to be. The female character is also equally well-written and confirms to young women that they too can rise up and face challenges that others may not espouse. Well-written, I look forward to a sequel.

I never did like purple anyway
By Gingerlily (SteamTink)
After reading and enjoying both Nick's non-fiction books (Life... With No Breaks and Life... On A High) I was excited to see that he had come up with a fiction offering. I bought it as soon as he announced it, and I have just finished it with a large sigh of satisfaction.
Its a fantasy book, so there was a good chance that I would like it. On the other hand, there are a lot of mediocre fantasy book about, so it wasn't a sure thing... However, this is very much one of the better ones I have read. It's main characters are teenagers - the hero being a typical obnoxious teen, but somehow he manages to be likable as well. He, along with the other main characters are well drawn and believable, and very involving.
He still has plenty of humour - there are many places where the story is getting quite tense and exciting, and suddenly there is a flash of humour that is the funnier for being unexpected. The whole thing is a good balance between being exciting and being tongue in cheek. The story is simple and appealing - probably suitable for teens, while being exciting and absorbing for adults as well. Its a fairly light and entertaining read.
Hmmm.. must check out my library for any books glowing silver and singing, while of course avoiding anybody with purple smoke coming out of their eyes!
