This book tells the story of a Jewish community from the United States who looking to understand their own heritage and traditions. They do this by seeking out the teachings of Buddhism and seeing what this faith understanding can teach them. About the Author

Thomas M. Nordlund is an associate professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, Dr. Nordlund has performed research in biomolecular dynamics for 30 years. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, under the supervision of Hans Frauenfelder.

Great introduction text

I am a graduate student pursuing new research interests in biophysics. At my university, the first class in the biophysics track chose this text and delivered its content as a merged undergrad/grad class. Generally, I found the book very helpful as an introduction to biophysics but the text lacks flow from topic to topic and the questions found at the end of each section are very open-ended which can sometimes be a good and bad thing. Overall, this first attempt by the author is a comprehensive start-up guide for those interested in biophysics. The most valuable feature of the text is the merging of biology and physics in near-perfect proportion which spurs many intriguing conversations between students. In order to capitalize on this, as the author mentions within the text, one must pair physicists with biologists; and with that, the book helped create a valuable experience for my first interaction with biophysics.

Not in color

The website describes this book as being "in color". However the copy I received is entirely in black and white which makes it difficult to follow examples with multiple colors when the textbook says "so and so is in red, this is in blue" and all I am looking at is a black and white image.

The textbook itself is quite good, I just wish the copy I received followed the description given by Amazon

Perfect gift. Many of the songs would take me about a 1-2 days of practice to get down (I've played since elementary school). Intricate enough to sound interesting, but not overly difficult. A lot of the pieces are 2-3 pages long... I wish some of them could have been longer, but will be perfect for sacrament meeting performances.

Bizzbilla is a fly who has a giant crush on Ariol. He doesn't know though as he has a crush on a cow named Petula. Bizzbilla only appears twice in this collection, and stars in both stories, but that was a little disappointing as I thought with the title and all she'd be featured throughout. Otherwise​, what can I say. A thoroughly delightful collection of stories about everybody's favourite blue donkey and all his anthropomorphic friends and family. I just love Ariol!

Just awful

I could never get into this story because I was so aware at every moment that it was a made up spy novel without a shred of believability. It was absurd, really. Even the character supposed to be British spoke like an American putting on a British accent. The attempt at a southern accent was laughably the worst I've ever heard. I don't mind suspending disbelief in the interests of a good story but this was just too much. Our stalwart protagonist was amazingly able to see through every improbable situation to determine what was really going on. Having done that he always know just what to do. What a guy!

WE love the Camel Club series. The audio book is great to listen to during shopping trips and just plain running around. Long trips are even better listening. Too much junk and bad news on the radio, especially election time.

Arguing with Everything

This book starts with the standards of rhetoric laid down by Aristotle over two milennia ago. It explains the kinds, purposes, and conventions of classical argument in a vernacular English that contemporary teachers will be able to expound upon, and students will be able to comprehend. In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing

This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook

(this is a review for the fourth edition 2007)
This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.

About the Author
F.G. Cottam was born and brought up in Southport in Lancashire, attending the University of Kent at Canterbury where he took a degree in history before embarking on a career in journalism in London. He lived for 20 years in North Lambeth and during the 1990s was prominent in the lad-mag revolution, launch editing FHM, inventing Total Sport magazine and then launching the UK edition of Men’s Health. He now lives in Kingston upon Thames and his fiction is thought up over daily runs along the towpath between Kingston and Hampton Court Bridges. Over the past decade he’s been the author of ten paranormal thrillers, his latest project expanding his most popular novel The Colony into a trilogy.

FG Cottam is one of my favorite authors. In fact

FG Cottam is one of my favorite authors. In fact, I bought a Kindle because I wanted to read his first Colony novel ("The Colony") and I couldn't get it any other way. I read the book and loved it. Like many of his other books, I read it twice. Then when "Dark Resurrection" became available, I downloaded it to my Kindle and started to read it, but it had been at least a year since I'd read the first Colony novel, so partway through I stopped and reread the first one (for the third time) and then continued on with the second one. I am so anxious now to get the third one.

Cottam's novels are so well written and I thoroughly enjoy his writing style, his way of telling a story. His characters are very three-dimensional, very well developed. And the plots contain many surprises. I love that he incorporates music in his novels and I've discovered that he often mixes factual with fictional, such as music, writers, poets, and more. He has me running to my computer to check things out on the Internet. I've learned a lot about historical eras that never really interested me before but thanks to his writing I get curious and start doing more research into and reading about those eras.

His stories are darkly horrific, the kind of dark paranormal horror I love. It raises the hair on the back of your neck. If you want a scary, really scary bit of reading, read "The Magdalena Curse." The chapter where the hero visits the stronghold of the witch is terrifying. It takes a lot to scare me with a story but that scene terrified me. I almost couldn't get through it.

But I digress from The Colony novels. Both are excellent and I recommend reading them in order. I realize they are all meant to be stand-alone stories, but to get the impact, I think it best to read them one right after the other if possible.

Sequel to "The Colony" - not as good as the first

I loved F.G. Cottam's "The Colony" so I bought this one as soon as I finished it. While "Dark Resurrection" was a good book, it wasn't quite as good as the first, but then sequels rarely are. "Dark Resurrection" picks up several years after the incidents in the first book. We are caught up on the character's lives in the intervening period, and are introduced to new characters. Like the first book, F.G. Cottam's characters are a strong point. He (or she) creates characters that are well developed, have shades of grey, and that the reader comes to care for. However, in this book in order to get the characters to where the author wants them to be, they make some really poor choices that the characters we first met in the previous book would not have made. It's obvious plot contrivance is a bit disrupting to the flow of the story. The introduction of the new character, a children's book writer named Ruthie, is the bright spot of the book. She is a great character and one we can empathize with and cheer on. The atmosphere of the island itself was suitably formidable, although I did not understand the change of heart the revenant/demon seems to have. It didn't fit.
If you plan to read this book, be sure you've read the first one beforehand. It's much better and you need the background before reading this one. This book is still entertaining, it's just not as good as the first. I'll try another of the author's books in hopes it will be as good as the first.

A very creepy, fitting sequel to The Colony

I read the first novel "The Colony" a few weeks ago and enjoyed it very much. "Dark Resurrection" takes place several years after the events of "The Colony" and is a fitting sequel to that novel. I found "The Colony" a lot scarier and more atmospheric than "Dark Resurrection", but the return some of the original characters from "The Colony" has allowed F.G. Cottam to give them more depth and enabled me to understand better their motivations and personalities. The introduction of new characters in this novel, Ruthie Gillespie and Dennis Thorpe, gives the story a lot of new and unexpected twists. I enjoy F.G. Cottam's writing style and I have read almost all of his horror novels, which rely on atmosphere, suggestion, character and creeping dread - very gothic and dark. I would suggest that you read "The Colony" before reading "Dark Resurrection" because there are a lot of details in "The Colony" that will make you appreciate this novel so much more and make you even more frightened of going back to New Hope Island.
