Help Yourself to Better Humor

Humor is a quality all of us possess, yet I for one, need to take it in regularly. I found this work as a little manual to get humor as well as heal and energize. I understand the authors have lots of experience reinventing themselves, Mr. Hoare likens himself to the "golden seam" Japanese ceramics which are masterpieces, stronger after having been broken. Laughter is often heartier after surviving tragedy...it looks funnier with the perspective of time.

Terrible Disappointment

This book was a terrible disappointment. I got it because we saw him on TV and he was a lively presenter and made things look easy. Unfortunately, the book did not live up to the presentation. The photos and diagrams are so dark as to be indecipherable, especially the ones showing the brushstrokes which are the most essential information. Without being able to see and understand the diagrams, the text is not very helpful at all. Even the cover photo is much darker than depicted. Here on the computer it looks light and lively... in the reality, it looks dull and grim. I would have wanted to try another of his books, but since the photo of the cover and the actual cover are so different, I would have no confidence that the inside of another book would be any better.

This is an older painting book by Gary Jenkins, most likely out of print. The pages are darken probably because of it's age. I do like this book, it has lots of painting tips and instructions.

About the Author
Smith Wigglesworth (1859–1947) was born in England in 1859. Immediately after his conversion as a boy, he had a concern for the salvation of others and won people to Christ, including his mother. He became a plumber by trade, yet he continued to devote himself to winning many people to Christ on an individual basis. In 1882, he married Polly Featherstone, a vivacious young woman who loved God and had a gift of preaching and evangelism. It was she who taught him to read and who became his closest confidant and strongest supporter. They both had compassion for the poor and needy in their community, and they opened a mission, at which Polly preached. Significantly, people were miraculously healed when Wigglesworth prayed for them.

In 1907, Wigglesworth's circumstances changed dramatically when, at the age of forty–eight, he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, he had a new power that enabled him to preach, and even his wife was amazed at the transformation. This was the beginning of what became a worldwide evangelistic and healing ministry that reached thousands. He eventually ministered in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and all over Europe. His ministry extended to the time of his death in 1947.

The Believer's Rich Inheritance in Christ

The Good Lord confirmed the ministry of this blessed man of God through powerful signs and wonders.
This book reveals the privilages the believer has in Christ Jesus; the power that is available through the Holy Spirit to do exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ever hope for. Wigglesworth shows the believer how to secure G-d's favor on their life, obtain freedeom from sin, practice the presence of
G-d, take authority over the enemy, and experience the supernatural.
This book is a wonderful faith builder, simply written, and very positive. Only believe, all things are possible.

The Paraclete, which is translated as "Advocate" or "Comforter," is the guiding force that shapes John's Gospel vision of Jesus. This Comforter is the Holy Spirit which enables one to heal, it's not Smith Wigglesworth who heals, but the Holy Spirit working through Smith Wigglesworth. The experiences and emotions Mr. Wigglesworth bears during his walk with the Lord are expressed in his writings. This is not an autobiography, it's the words he put down expressing the experience of having the Holy Spirit work through him.

A very thorough investigation but slightly biased

This book is probably the most comprehensive collection of information on Anna Anderson, the woman who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anastasia. The book begins with what is known of Anderson's early life and continues until her death, spanning several decades, two continents and many court battles.
However, I felt that the book leaned too heavily on the evidence that supported Anderson's claim. From the mystery's beginning until its conclusive end, there was always much evidence against the possibility on Anderson being Anastasia. Some is included in the book, but not dwelt upon as much as some of the other evidence.
The updated section on the DNA testing is fascinating and very well written and should prove once and for all the claimant's identity, although some doubters still remain.
Even though the mystery does conclude at the end of the book this is still a fascinating read, especially for anyone interested in Russian or royal history.

Baffled and Bothered

I read this book in the knowledge that the case of Fraullein Unbekannt/Anna Anderson is now meant to represent the story of the Twentieth Century's most famous impostor. So I expected I would easily be able to spot the holes in Anna Anderson's "story" and see the author's belief in her identity as little more then mawkish sentimentality. And his prose ebbs and flows ~ it is, at times, grating. Yet, after reading the extraordinarily convincing case he gradually presents, I simply was, and am, baffled. I am expected to be dismissive of this apparently "obsolete" book in the light of some negative DNA results, but I refuse to be. Besides, for me, the results of the DNA make it all the more mezmerizing. Of course, I do not want to believe the DNA results, any way. I try to remember A) that DNA is NOT 100 percent foolproof, and B) that it is possible (if relatively unlikely) that somebody, somehow, perpetrated some kind of "switch" on the samples tested. Yet, if I accept that the DNA was not tampered with, and moreover constitutes the best form of scientific identification ("proof") that mankind has on offer, then a huge gaping question remains: How did she do it? How could so many people simply have been so WRONG? The scientists, the graphologists, the friends and (some) relatives of the authentic Grand Duchess, the author of this book even, all of whom believed Anna was Anastasia? Has anybody made any attempt to reconcile the array of convincing evidence on hand ASIDE from DNA, or explain away the knowledge Anna had of the Romanov family, evidence which suggests she was indeed who she said she was? Her opponents, cited in the book, were fond of saying she was coached in her knowledge by "Russian monarchists", but how? How could Russian monarchists ~ most of whom never knew the Imperial Family ~ have had the knowledge Anna Anderson had? Am I really expected to believe that somebody falsely claiming to be a Russian princess just happened to be lucky enough to have so much evidence to prove it ~ identical hand~writing, ears matching at "seventeen anatomical points", scars such as one would expect to find on the survivor of a massacre like Ekaterinburg? It was furthermore a stroke of genius luck that Anna should claim to be Anastasia seventy years before the Grand Duchess's body was proven to be missing from the Romanov burial site. I was, in short, deeply impressed by Kurth's biography, but far more deeply baffled.

The only thing proving she isn't Anastasia is the DNA

Kurth starts out with Anna Anderson in Berlin, where she attempts suicide and then follows her all the way up through to her life in Charlottesville, my version of the book also has an afterwards about her death and the eventually DNA results. He then goes on to explain all of the information and mannerisms which many people believed distinguished her as the Grand Duchess Anastasia. I won't go into all the different details since so many reviewers before me already have, but all I have to say is that if she isn't Anastasia, I find it amazing that she was capable of fooling members of the royal families who knew her personally, and childhood friends.

Whether or not I believe Anna Andersons claim, well honestly, I'm not sure whether I do or not. If there was only the evidence of her knowledge to go by, then yes I would absolutely believe her, there's just to many things she has an intimate knowledge of to make it all a mere coincidence. I can't imagine how a poor Polish factory worker would be able to speak German and English, and understand Russian, or have such an air of royalty which all who met her agreed she was in possession of. Also, there would be no way for her to gain knowledge of all that she knew, personally conversations she had with childhood friends, events which would only be important to the Imperial family, and the secret visit of the Duke of Hesse in 1916, among many other facts. DNA evidence makes it impossible however to believe it truly is her, because DNA simply doesn't lie, so unless they were testing the wrong person (which many fanatics believe is true) there's no way she could be the Grand Duchess, so unfortunately I'm left unable to believe. Of course there's the third option that Anastasias spirit jumped into Anna Andersons body, which would explain her knowledge and mannerisms, this is however quite far fetched, and unbelievable.

Overall I found this book fascinating and feeling deeply for Anastasia, or whoever this woman is, Kurth clearly believes Anna Anderson is the Grand Duchess and presents his information in a biased way, but I don't believe this negatively impacts this book in any way. Hopefully one day this mystery will be solved, until then however we'll be left wondering who this woman is, and if she isn't Anastasia, how she got all of this intimate knowledge of the family.

About the Author

Veronica Sekules is Head of Education at the Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia, and was formerly exhibitions and collections curator. Her original research interests were in the fields of sculpture and liturgical furnishings in England and Europe from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. She has also written about the art patronage and consumption of art by medieval women, and continues to work on these themes. She has published regularly in the fields of visual arts and museum education and modern art.

good product , compact book. its factual, so don't expect sensational remarks:} however if your looking for objectivity and careful observation this book is for you. it is a good book for factual reference with extensive pictures. i would recommend this book for those who want fact and less opinion in the narration of the text. the colored images are lush with detail and side notes to enhance understanding of that particular painting.

A Fantastic Coffee Table Book, Even for Non-Architecture Fans.

I enjoy Legos a lot. Even as an adult nearing middle age, I still buy the occasional set and put them together. One series I've never gotten into though is the Architecture line. They're too small for my taste and I've never found them to look too much like the actual buildings they are modeled after. They just come off cheesy to me, especially the ones with "water." However I love coffee table books and especially design oriented ones, so I decided to give this one a try.

I have to say, I am really glad I picked this up. Normally my reviews aren't this gushing, but I loved everything about it. The book is high quality in terms of both substance and style. It comes in an extremely durable slipcover with glossy matte finish and Lego artwork. The cover of the book is an inversion of the slipcover design, as it is shadows/silhouettes of the Legos compared to artsy photos on the box. I have to admit, this is the best slipcover for an item I've seen outside the ones Nippon Ichi makes for its premium edition videos. Color me impressed.

The book itself is equally awesome. Not only do each of the twenty-two offerings in the Lego Architecture line get their own section, each one has a plethora of interesting information and wonderful photos taken of them. Take Big Ben, which is pretty much my standard for why I don't think the Lego Architecture line is very good. You get tons of pictures of the complete piece, each from different angles, along with footnoted and tidbits about the design process. You also get photos of the real structure the Lego set was patterned after. There is a side by side (well page by page) comparison of the real thing with the Lego version, and also a history of the building and its chief designer(s). So not only do you learn a lot about what went into the Lego version, but you also walk away with having learning something about the real historical piece. I loved that! each entry in this visual guide follows the same format and it really is a joy to read.

Besides the sections on the specific Lego sets, you also get a timeline for the series, profiles of the Lego staff that designed these sets, information on the creative process and a look at the different bricks used in all of the sets.

Although I probably won't buy any of the Architecture sets showcased in this collection, I really did learn a lot from this book and it was as fun to read as it was to look at. I walked away with some more respect for the Architecture line and I'm sure I will flip through this again from time to time.

Beautiful

For the true Lego Maniac, this book is incredible. It is essentially a huge beautifully photographed catalog of the Lego Architecture series. Just about every model available in the series is included in the book.

On a pure coffee table picture book standpoint, this is a nice book. The paper is heavy weight. In DK style, the photographs of the full sized architecture are gorgeous. First opening of this book is awe inspiring, the book is held in a thick heavy cardboard slipcase. The book is bound in cardboard with glossy paper glued over the cardboard. The binding is tight and allows the book to be laid flat.

There is a bit of background text about the creative process and profiles of the artists that designed these models. The core of the book is each model. The formula is the same for each of the 22 models. A close up picture two page spread of the model. On the next page the design artist's perspective on what was critical with the building. The facing page is a picture of the whole model. The next page pair is a breakdown of the construction with key elements called out. And the last pair of pages DK shines the most, beautiful pictures of the original building and some text describing the building.

As a catalog and casual coffee table book, this is outstanding. If I were in the market for one of these kits, this would be the best place in the world to make that purchase decision.

As a Lego Maniac that has built a few of these kits, the information in this book isn't much more than what is included in the Lego kit box. If you already own a number of these kits, this book is pretty but redundant.

Because Lego Architecture kits are priced at a huge premium over standard Lego kits, this book is a good choice as a catalog. As a dream book, it also succeeds. This is probably not the book for somebody that has collected a number of the Architecture kits.

The condition of what I got is bad. It seems like what I got is not brand new, but used one.
But the contents of this book is really great, my boy like it, he enjoy Legos a lot.

Great BOOK

This is the best tab book i own. It is filled with info like how he makes some of the crazy noises like in foxey lady and the flick thing in voodoo chile. Everything is tabbed out to the smallest change and all is accurate. It includes drums, bass and any other wierd intruments or 2nd guitar parts[or 3rd].a time measure is given so you can play along with a drum machine or metronome if desired. It gives an intro to each song telling about it. It matches a cd so you can listen to it right along with it. I found some of the songs hard in that the "riffs" being played were not always easily recognizable and could be subject to your personal interpretation of it but still its all there.Very good book, i highly reccomend it.

Couldn't Have Been Happier!

I'm no top notch guitarist who can play some Hendrix with their eye's closed, but i'm all right, and I couldn't have been happier with this book. The Tabs to me seemed like they were dead on accurate. I must admit that some of the chords Mr. Hendrix used are kinda crazy when your fretting them but once you get used to it you'll be allright. If you just got into Hendrix or have been into his music for some time this book won't do you wrong!!

I'm a sophomore, English education major. I'm currently taking The study of Language course. This book is extremely helpful if you're learning to read the phonetic alphabet. It comes complete with a chart and examples.

About the Author
Guitar players may not recognize Joe Carr's name at first, but his face is probably familiar. That's because he appears in over 20 instructional guitar videos ranging from country to western swing, bluegrass and even heavy metal! Add to these his videos on mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and ukulele and Joe may be the most recorded video music instructor anywhere. Joe is a self-taught musician originally from Denton, Texas who started guitar at age 13, inspired by the folk musicians of the 1960's. A few years later, he was hired to play guitar in Alan Munde's internationally known bluegrass group, Country Gazette. Over the next six years Joe recorded 3 group albums, numerous sideman projects and produced his own critically acclaimed solo guitar album, Otter Nonsense. Joe left the Country Gazette in 1984 and joined the music faculty in the unique commercial music program at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Throughout the 1990s he continued to record and perform with former Gazette leader and South Plains College colleague Alan Munde. In addition to two albums on the Flying Fish label, Joe and Alan have published an award-winning book about West Texas Country Music called Prairie Nights to Neon Lights from the Texas Tech University Press. Joe is editor of Mel Bay's Mandolin Sessions® and Ukulele Sessions® webzines and is also a regular columnist for Flatpicking Guitar magazine and Mandolin Magazine. He was awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association's Distinguished Achievement award in 2008.

I Love This Book / Joe Carr's Books

A "beginning" intermediate player, I know more than cowboy chords, first position, but have yet to play lead or connect the bits of basic skills and knowledge. This book and CD are addicting.

The book is easy to follow, but still challenging enough to be rewarding when I "get it." I feel like I'm actually going somewhere with my skills now. The whole book seems laid out really well - easy to follow, not too complicated, and it all makes sense. The skills taught are basic and generic, but interesting, and very useable once learned. Mr. Carr breaks the lessons and examples down into segments, then puts them together.

Did I say I love this book?

I read music like I speak Spanish - slowly. I like that Carr's examples are both in tablature and standard musical notation. I know enough musical notation to have a better overall understanding of the material through these examples. I feel really pleased that Mr. Carr explains the full and/or abbreviated chord shapes as he goes along, and the relation of the licks to these shapes up and down the neck. I am also pleased that the fretting hand "start" finger is often given when the material changes between chords or positions.

At first I thought the sound files were a wee bit fast. I've decided I like them as they are. I could use a "slow-downer" program, but I'm getting it as is! I put the CD sound files on my iPod, make a playlist with only the lesson I'm working on, continually looping the same tune until I'm ready to practice on my own.

So pleased with this book, and my other Joe Carr books. In over 30 years of guitar playing, much of it "stuck" in folk/three chord country songs and power chords, I'm making real progress.

My favorite guitar books ever! In Texas, our official state music is Western Swing and the official state instrument is guitar.

False advertising

The Amazon description for this says, "Western Swing master Joe Carr has transcribed the great guitar solos from the Bob Wills band and other greats and breaks them down note by note into useful licks that can be used to improvise original hot solos. Includes solos by western swing legends Eldon Shamblin, Jimmy Wyble, Leon Rhodes, Junior Benard (often called the first rockabilly) and more."

None of that is true. This book doesn't contain a single transcription of an actual solo played by any of those men. Rather, it contains several "in the style of" solos written by Joe Carr. Like many of these method books, the examples are very inferior to the real thing. Many of them sound awkward and atonal in places.

I gave the book three stars anyway because it does a good job of explaining some of the theory behind the style, so I think it's a useful instructional aid. But if you really want to learn tasty "take off" western swing solos, you'll still have to transcribe real ones on your own, and maybe transcribe recordings of yourself singing improvised solos over chord progressions, assuming that you're already familiar with the style by listening to it.

This book will help you understand the theory behind western swing, but don't expect it to teach you to actually play the style in a tasty manner. That's going to require a lot of additional work.

Great Book, Well Done..

Well written and clearly explained. The examples include both lead and rhythm aspects of Western Swing guitar. The book in only 48 pages so the while well done there are not a lot of examples given. Good basis for improvisation. I'd say beginner to itermediate or advanced players not familiar with Westen Swing.

About the Author
Dr. Steven Gerali is a speaker, professor, and clinical counselor recognized around the world as an expert in the field of adolescence and youth ministry. He is the author of several books about the issues of adolescence. Before becoming a professor of youth ministry, Steve served for more than 25 years as pastor of student ministries at churches in Arizona and Illinois in the United States. He is the father of two grown daughters and he currently lives in southern California with his wife, Jan.

The Instruction Manual You've Been Looking For

It's amazing how much as youth workers we think we know about kids because of what we remember or because of what we observe. But unless you have a doctorate in adolescent issues, you probably don't know as much as you think.

Steve Gerali does, and his research into the psychology, sociology, and physiology of teenage boys really has helped me understand the "why" behind a lot of the frustrating, interesting, and fun things the guys I work with do. More than that, however, it helps me understand what's happening in their hearts, minds, and bodies and how to work with them as a result of what's going on in there.

Following the principles Gerali has laid out in this book really will help you work with teenage guys. Whether you're a parent or youth worker, this really is the closest thing you can find to an instruction manual for understanding and relating to the teenage guys in your life.

Better than most Christian guys' books

It's tough to distinguish amongst youth-help books. Read enough, and they begin to sound the same. Yet Gerali's presentation is among the most helpful Christian guys' books I've read. He explains underlying issues of teen guys and offers a wealth of practical advice.

Visually the book is appealing, with charts and sidebar comments. The sections are divided clearly by subject (i.e. growth spurts, homosexuality, suicide, etc.) for easy reference. The style is far more personal than academic, an easy read.

Gerali is personal but not unlearned. He has a bone to pick with some Christian guy literature like Wild at Heart and the Every Man series. ("Every Young Man's Battle throws out the baby with the bath water," he writes.) Some of these bones are legitimate, and I appreciate his critical perspective of other voices.

Be aware, however, that the "Guys and Sex" section itself (chapter 3.1) has some controversial parts: "We need to teach [teen] guys how to think sexually pure (by this I mean that they can think a lot about sex and still know that it's pure)." Gerali's perspective is a little more open, in my opinion, than the Bible presents. Still, he gives us something to think about.

Overall, a valuable reference for anyone leading or raising teen guys. A helpful companion book: Raising Cain by Kindlon and Thompson.

Essential For Youth Ministry

Working with teeange guys in junior high youth group at my church, local public schools, and every summer at camps counseling high school and junior high students, TEENAGE GUYS looked like a good book to add to my youth ministry bookshelf. And it was. And this should be on every youth worker's to-get list.

Gerali uses tons of examples and stories from his personal experiences as a youth worker and trained psychologist to show the state of teenage guys today, and how they are interacting with the world. He covers a whole handful of issues including homosexuality, suicide, anger, suppressed emotions in guys, intelluctual development, guys and their fathers/mothers, and the spiritual development of teenage guys. Gerali goes everywhere with his topics - even into the heavy-handed, hardly-talked-about issues facing guys. The appendixes are incredibly helpful, going deeper into physiological changes in guys as well as listing out various sexual diseases and other physical problems they face.

But Gerali doesn't just list out a bunch of problems - he talks about how to actually deal with them and help students find hope in Jesus. Don't pass this one up.
