An interesting book for anyone who enjoys reading about early Japan court life. A good historical book on early Japan.

I have always had an avid interest in anything to do with ancient Japanese culture. Their haiku, senryu and Tanka are my favorite poetry forms. I also love their literature but I had not read this famous book (The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon translated and edited by Ivan Morris) until recently. I purchased it on Amazon for a bargain price.

This very enlightening book came from Sei Shonagon who was a court lady in tenth-century Japan. It is actually a personal diary of a woman who explains all the things she likes and displeases her in the daily life of a court lady. She comments on a wide range of topics such as nature and the seasons, the flowers she likes, the importance of good manners, people she likes and hates, the behavior of servants, the correct behavior of lovers and numerous other topics. This book has real historical value because it covers the everyday life of people who are part of the royal family as well as the servants and mistresses of court life in tenth-century Japan.

What makes this book unique is that it chronicles the common everyday life in early Japan and shows the emphasis on good manners and proper dress and attitude was essential to all from the highest to the lowest. This 411 page paperback book also has some interesting illustrations showing the clothes and houses of this period.

Charm and wit

If you are interested in books that shed light on life in the old world, this book is for you! The striking thing about this book is that it really seems like Sei Shonagon (the author) wanted her work to be read by people of the future. It is almost like reading a blog from ancient Japan! She is very funny, and her cutting wit is relentless. This book is an absolute treasure, and this paperback publication is nicely presented.

Engaging, sometimes beautiful, but ultimately shallow

If Sei Shonagon were alive today, she would be a livejournalist. That's the overall impression I got from this book--it reads very much like a modern livejournal or blog, being a collection of random observations on whatever Shonagon found interesting, lists of things she likes or dislikes, and snippets or scraps of poetry. Shonagon's use of metaphor and imagery is quite beautiful, and paints an evocative picture of a world, life, time and society very different from that of the modern day. However, she herself and the social circle in which she moves come off as fairly shallow, trivial and self-absorbed, as well as grotesquely classist and sometimes even cruel (as when she and her fellow ladies in waiting send a mocking poem to a commoner who has just lost his entire house and worldly possessions in a fire from which his son barely escaped.) Of course, given her own social status and position in her society at the time, perhaps these attitudes are to be expected; however, they still are not particularly attractive.

Nevertheless her writing is very readable, engaging, light and witty, and of course it is of great historical and literary significance, especially for something that was, by her own admission, not intended to be circulated publicly. It makes me wonder if any of today's blogosphere authors will still be read a thousand years from now, and what picture they will paint of modern society if they are.

Highly Useful Guide!!

Writing a Curriculum Vitae is both a science (statement of facts) as well as an art (presentation of facts). Unfortunately, many applicants are blissfully unaware of the presentation aspect and they thing that just presenting a sequence of data about themselves would suffice. Nothing could be farther from truth.

So many applicants compete with each other, and interviewers have so little time to sift and sort applications, that he who presents well will get noticed. This book is an excerpt from two books, one on CV and the other on Interviews. Most people would need only this eBook to guide them.

The book presents the subject accurately and forcefully, exactly the way a CV needs to be presented. It would help everyone who needs to write a CV.

I would say this book might work well for an individual who is just starting out writing cover letters and hasn't learned any techniques. Otherwise I feel this book is too general. After taking a class on the subject and doing online research there was just nothing new here.

Days of Courage great for teaching tolerance

This book allows the reader to see 1957 Little Rock Arkansas from the viewpoint of Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine African American teens to integrate Centeral Highschool.
Richard Kelso writes in a manner which allows young readers to grasp the political situation that America was in ,and the racial tension that was blatantly displayed at the time.
Students who have read this book also find the personal viewpoint of teenage Eckford easy to relate to. The characters were very real and understandable.
I have taught this book to both 4th and 6th grades with great success. It is a great discussion starter and tolerance teacher.

Days of Courage a great book for awareness training

This serious book tackles the huge topic of discrimination in a very real and easy to understand manner. Students are able to grasp the frustration of ninth grade Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine African American teens that struggled to integrate Little Rock High. I have successfully used this book to discuss civil rights and freedom with grades 4-6.
A great book to teach in conjunction with The Sneeches by Dr. Suess, and Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals (another of the Little Rock Nine).

He had previously worked for Fenchurch Capital Management, Refco, and the Chicago Board of Trade. Labuszewski is coauthor of four previous industry-related texts. He earned an MBA from the University of Illinois.

JOHN E. NYHOFF is Director of Financial Research and Product Development at CME Group. He has lectured extensively in the interest rate derivative product area, and has taught financial futures and options and related courses at DePaul University and several other Chicago-area colleges. Nyhoff is coauthor of two industry-related texts: Trading Options on Futures and Trading Financial Futures (both from Wiley). He holds a master's in financial economics from the University of Rochester, a master's in economics from Northern Illinois University, and a bachelor's degree in economics from DePaul University.

I have this book and while I read it once all the way through I have used it a lot more as a reference book. If you are a beginning futures trader you should definitely read this book. If you have been trading for a long time you will still find tons of very useful information that you may or may not be familiar with. About the Author

Stephen Sweet is Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Ithaca College and formerly the associate director of the Cornell Careers Institute, a Sloan Center for the Study of Working Families. He has written a number of articles on the challenges confronting working families, focusing on the issues of concern to dual career couples across the life course. His studies have appeared in a variety of publications, including the New Directions in Life Course Research, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Innovative Higher Education, The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, Journal of College Student Development, and Community, Work, and Family. Stephen’s other book with SAGE is The Work-Family Interface. He has also published The Handbook of Work and Family with co-authors Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Ellen Ernst Kossek;  Managing Careers in the New Risk Economy, with co-investigator Phyllis Moen; College and Society: An Introduction to the Sociological Imagination, and Data Analysis with SPSS: A First Course in Applied Statistics. Stephen has been the recipient of a Sloan Officers Grant to study the effects of corporate downsizing on dual earner couples.

Peter Meiksins is a Professor of Sociology at Cleveland State University. He is the author of many articles on the sociology of work, including studies of the work experiences of engineers and part-time work in professional technical occupations and essays on labor process theory, professional work in comparative perspective, and contemporary labor relations. His work has appeared in a variety of journals, including Work and Occupations, Theory and Society, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Work, Employment and Society, and Sociological Quarterly. He is the author of Putting Work in Its Place: A Quiet Revolution (with Peter Whalley) and of Engineering Labour: Technical Workers in Comparative Perspective (with Chris Smith). Peter’s other books are Rethinking the Labor Process (with Mark Wardell and Tom Steiger) and Rising From the Ashes: Labor in the Age of Global Capitalism (with Ellen Wood and Michael Yates). He and co-investigator Peter Whalley received a major grant from the Sloan Foundation to study “Flexible Work for Technical Professionals.” Peter’s current research concerns the sociology of design work (a study of the work of graphic designers, industrial designers and interior designers). This research has been supported by a Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline grant from the American Sociological Foundation.

This volume contains all its authors writings, so far as we have been able to collect them, on the subject of the Church. It completes the number originally proposed for those of his works which are more or less strictly of a theological character. There are two things connected with the remarkable providence of Dr. Thornwell sdeath at the comparatively early age of fifty years, which, in our human dialect, we say are to be deeply regretted. The first is, that many of the priceless treasures accumulated by sanctified genius quickened into energy by extraordinary industry, which in the judgment of all who knew him he was best prepared to pour forth just when he was summoned to die, are irrecoverably lost to us. Mighty thoughts, for which he had wrestled, as in agony, in the sleepless hours of night, went unuttered with his spirit into the eternal sphere. He took more with him than he left behind, great as is the legacy which he has bequeathed the Church. The second cause of regret is, that he did not live to perfect what he had written and to reduce it to systematic form a task as easy to his logical mind as desirable to the completeness of his works, but one A vhich, from the nature of the case, no survivor could attempt to execute.

No doubt this is an important and valuable book, but reading it will be quite a chore due to indistinct printing.
