About the Author
Dr. Nagaratnam Sivakugan is Associate Professor and Head of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, James Cook University, Australia. He graduated from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka with First Class Honors, and received his MSCE and Ph.D. from Purdue University, USA. As a Chartered Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland, he does substantial consulting work for geotechnical and mining companies throughout Australia and internationally. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia. Dr. Sivakugan has published more than 50 scientific and technical papers in refereed international journals, and 50 more in refereed international conference proceedings.

Dr. Braja M. Das, Professor and Dean Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento, is presently a Geotechnical Consulting Engineer in the State of Nevada. He earned his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and is a registered professional engineer. He is the author of best-selling geotechnical engineering texts and reference books including Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, Principles of Foundation Engineering, Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering, and Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering. Dr. Das has served on the editorial boards of several international journals and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. Review of the book Geotechnical Engineering by Sivakugan and Das

This book is intended for undergraduate students and it does an excellent job of presenting the concepts and worked examples. This book is written well and it is easy to read for undergraduate students to study the concepts and reinforce their understanding of the concepts through worked examples. The book uses a lot of graphics to explain the concepts and presents the derivation of all necessary equations in a simpler way. Sections on foundation engineering are particularly done well. This book covers more topics than normally taught to undergraduates in US schools. I taught a graduate course in a major university in NJ recently and I found that sections on earth retaining structures and slope stability are very useful for graduate students as well. As a practicing engineer, I find this book a convenient reference to look at long forgotten concepts and equations! Even though this book is not intended for graduate students, I suggest the authors enhance the book by presenting more heavy duty discussion of concepts by referencing extensive research performed on many areas of geotechnical engineering.

Honestly, this really wasn't a very helpful book. All it seemed to be was a bunch of information gathered from a ton of other cat books and compiled into this one. Author Barry Hughes sets the tone for his book early on. It starts by asking a number of questions, such as "[i]s global population growing faster than our ability to feed it? Should we expect economic growth to characterize the rest of the century?" These questions are seen with frequency in the field of future studies. But the author lets the reader know that he will not offer any definitive answers to these questions, as he does not claim to have abilities in interpreting a crystal ball. Instead, he honors the book's title by framing within a single structure different, and often opposing, points of view on a number of issues. Avoiding determinism, the author notes that "the arguments for forecasting are strong, we still must be very careful not to take our forecasts too seriously." The accuracy of the forecasts presented varied. Population estimates presented in the book were within range. The book did seem to avoid some areas altogether, especially in the political field. The fate of the Soviet Union, which collapsed four years later, was not only not anticipated, but also it was not addressed. The emergence of China was also ignored. When it came to energy use, the experts showed too much faith in the promise of emerging technologies, as we have repeatedly done throughout history.

The cautious and informative approach taken by the author will fit well the critical reader, as the book does not attempt to offer simplistic answers to complicated questions. It is easy to dismiss books dealing with future studies that were published long ago. But reading such books, armed with today's precious retrospective, allow us to evaluate our own ability to look into the future. Reading this book was an interesting experience. The reader cannot help to realize that having a critical perspective proved to be more valuable than any crystal ball. Amazing how some things have not changed at all.

Meeting with the Titians

As I finish my final weeks as an art education major, I have tried to complete a reference guide for some of my friends that I will be leaving behind in my department. Other than books by Dr. George Szekely, Viktor Lowenfeld's book "Creative and Mental Growth" stands as the 'bible' for the educator, period. Art isn't "frill" or "elective classes" to children, it is the way of life. Without the understanding of how children view their world and how it does bend toward creative expression, a teacher is simply stumbling around in the darkness. In this stumbling a teacher may find a light switch from time to time. However, join the rest of us with the "torch" of post-modern education with Mr. Lowenfeld's book.

Quality of "used" book

If you insist on getting a coloured version of the book, try to contact the book-seller first and ask for more inforamion. Hopefully they will reply. For your information, I ordered one used book from a bookseller who did not reply me at all after waiting for 7 working days. Decided to risk the chance and order the book. Unfortunately, that used book is totally printed in black and white. Poor printing quality. But considering the warning that was given in year 2005, I expected this to happen anyway. Bewere buyers.

an essential text for all art teachers

This was one of the few required texts in my art ed classes that I did not sell back at the end of the term, and the only text which i still refer to 10 years after graduation. It contains valueable information for any educator who wants to ensure the creative growth of their students. It also includes a wonderful chart of children's artistic development. I've highly recomended it to every student teacher I have trained.

A wonderful dedication

As an actual interviewee, I was happy to read this. Steven was an amazing interviewer, and he and Bonnie did an amazing job of combining our words into a fluid book!

Artistic, geeky, and very true to it's fandom. If you're a Sailor Moon fan, or call yourself a "Moonie", you've got to read this. Even if you've never quite gotten the phenomena, read it to get it. I'm actually buying a hard copy for my mother, who's never gotten my obsession.

This book is well researched, well written, and well intentioned, And very loyal to the cannon of the series and it's fans. I foresee this being one of the small smattering of North American unofficial Sailor Moon Books, and it's a welcome addition.

Thanks Steve for bringing our stories to life.

For fans and inquisitors alike

As a teen, I never understood Sailor Moon. I'd seen pictures and posters as a small child, but my first real encounter was a friend's recommendation when we were 11 years old. By description, it seemed indistinguishable from "Powerpuff Girls", which was too silly for my pre-teen sensibilities. A couple of years later, I could appreciate the art and style of "Powerpuff Girls", "Dexter's Lab", "Samurai Jack", and "Sheep in the Big City", but not "Sailor Moon". I still couldn't understand why something as far-reaching as Sailor Moon couldn't be as serious as "Batman: The Animated Series" or "Sonic the Hedgehog" (SatAM).

If "Sailor Moon" has never been your cup of preferred beverage, this book covers what we missed. For me, Sally and Bunny were strong role models, but they didn't have the same rapport with each other that male SatAM characters shared. Despite Dee Dee being the inspiration for "Dexter's Lab", she was relegated to a secondary role, in the final cut. The "Powerpuff Girls" were a nice change of pace, but they didn't have to worry about school or the social pressures that the Sailor Scouts encountered. These leading ladies had rapport, presence, and a sworn duty to protect life as we know it.

The "save the world" plot line seems tired, until we remember that this wasn't (and, sadly, still isn't) a typical role for female characters. Perhaps my craving for such stories would have been better satisfied if I'd given Sailor Moon a chance. With an example of strong and complex female leads, maybe I'd have craved more, knowing that girls deserve better. After reading this book, I hope we can all think critically about our fandoms, asking what spoke to us and why.

An excellent introduction to the Sailor Moon fandom for the uninitiated

I was one of the interviewees for this book, so I've known some of the details and findings for quite some time. Not only was it great to take part in such a project, but it was also fascinating to read about so many different experiences of Sailor Moon.

This is a light-hearted, casual read that serves as a great introduction to one of modern anime's most fundamental series. The Sailor Moon generation is grown up now, making our own culture and telling our own stories. This book helps explain why. As our generation creates more comics and TV shows, I can only imagine that Sailor Moon's influence will become even more prominent, and all the experiences captured in this book (mine included) reveal the starting points.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Sailor Moon's cultural impact. You don't have to be familiar with the series at all–in fact, you may enjoy the book even more if you're starting with little to no knowledge. Seasoned fans, on the other hand, will enjoy the throwbacks to Geocities and fansubbed VHS tapes.

Frequent tense-switching and wordy or passive sentences sometimes makes reading clunky, but the main points still come across clearly. Ultimately, this book is a collection of women telling their stories about their heroes, which are too often brushed aside.
