Don’t just live a life, leave a legacy.

Randall Bell has done us a tremendous service as he has zeroed in on the habits that lead to success and even happiness. These may not be all of the habits one needs nor do having these habits guarantee that a person will be successful and happy, but developing these habits does help in the process. He has divided them into four areas which make them easy to understand and apply. In each area he highlights the kinds of habits that contribute to success and happiness. Foundation For A More Rewarding Life?

I fortunately was able to purchase Rich Habits, Rich Life; The Four Cornerstones of All Great Pursuits by Randall Bell PhD (Author), Rich Germaine (Narrator), Leadership Press Institute (Publisher) with my audible membership and use one of my audible credits. The narrator does carefully go over the marshmallow study and explains how richness pours into other areas of a person’s life. However, the one area where I would have to definitely listen to the audio more times is where it is implied to not concern oneself with money as much. To the authors credit, he did not say that money was not important at all, it was just that I was hoping that there would be more info covered as to what to do if a person cannot ignore the popular saying that money does not matter even if they tried to. For instance, during my last year in the navy I easily made at least 3,000 dollars after taxes which influenced me to truly feel rich and I would have been probably had an easier time truly believing that it is not about the money. Please, know that I’m grateful for the money I pulled in then and what I pulled in during 2015, even with the fact that I made 11.29 per hour during the final quarter of the year. I know that it is up to me to make more money in 2016 and beyond, but I was just trying to diplomatically explain why it is currently hard for me to ignore the popular saying (even among many well-meaning popular and influential people) that it is not about the money (and I was hoping that there might be some advice on how to truly accept and believe the well-meaning saying that it is not about the money when a person’s external reality reflects otherwise). Aside from that popular money saying caveat from many well-meaning people, Rich Habits is still a meaningful audiobook to listen to.

Interesting, engaging, and easy to apply.

I found this book not only interesting, but also fun to read. The stories and examples provided by the author were not only relevant to what was being presented, but also interesting in their own right.
There are a number of behavioral and self-help type books on the market. This book focuses on behaviors that can one have a richer life by focusing on the four cornerstones for success: me, we, do, and be. Based on a bit of research as well as the author’s experience, what is covered seems well positioned to help one focus on the habits that will help them in life. While there are numerous examples and comments made on what you can do to improve habits and have a richer life, the author is very good at emphasizing it is better to aim small and actually accomplish or build a habit, then to over-commit and end up giving up in the same way most people give up New Year resolutions by about January 4th.
In addition to the information, stories, and examples the author provides, he also provides Rich Habit tips throughout the book. These are simple comments and tips that help emphasize key points. More interesting, most of these tips include the impact of following the tip on the average person’s happiness. For example, Rich Habit #22 states that people who wave to their neighbors are 69.9% more likely to be very happy. The book also includes a list of suggested commitments or challenges you can agree to do in order to put what you learned to practice. One of the nice (or maybe wise) things the author suggests is to avoid trying to do a bunch of items on these lists. Instead the author repeatedly says to pick something small and focus on accomplishing it. You can always pick up more tasks later, but a finer focus is more likely to get done!
To help apply what you read about, there are also a few reference tables at the end of the book along with a pretty extensive bibliography. This is great material if you want to dig deeper into some of the points and comments presented.
In reading this book, I took away several suggestions and tips on things to change about my habits. The fact that the book impacted my thought process on habits and how I will behave and interact with others is an indicated that the book had an impact on me. I found that this book helped teach how to better interact in the world. While it sounds a bit corny, the book actually did teach on how to be “me”, how to be “we”, how to “do” and how to “be”.
I can’t say that the book is a super deep discussion on these topics. If you are looking for a book that is deep in psychology and technical jargon around habits, success, and being the best at being you, then you might find this book falls short. Having said that, the book didn’t promise to be deep with analytics on the topic. In my opinion, the book provides enough information to provide practical advice when keeping the reader (me) engaged.
I thought that the book was an interesting, fun read that I believe most people will find valuable. While the author seems to like to tout is experience a lot, the stories he tells do add perspective to the discussions he is presenting on the cornerstones.
If you are interested in improving your habits around how you live and behave, then you’ll likely find this to be an interesting book as well. As I mentioned before, the best way to improve is to start with something relatively small and easy. Once you develop that into a habit, you can move on to a second small thing. One by one, you will likely build Rich Habits that can help lead to a Rich Life!
In full disclosure, I was given a copy of this book. It is, however, a book I would buy, and it is a book I’m likely to share copies with friends and family.
