Makes SPC easy and accessible to anyone

SPC is one of the most powerful tools available to any organization or workgroup that wants to implement continuous improvement. Unfortunately, it is not widely used outside of manufacturing or companies that are committed to quality. One of the reasons is that is perceived to be difficult to learn. This wonderful book changes that by introducing statistical process controls in a clear, gentle manner.
The book is divided into modules, each of which builds upon the preceding one, and can be used as a training text or as a self-study guide. The first module covers the basics: causes of variation, tools (historgrams, control charts, variable and attribute charts).
Modules 3 and 4 go deeper into the tools, explaining why you would use them, how to use them and how to interpret them. This is the heart of the book.
Machine and process capability, the subject of module 5, can be applied beyond the shop floor. For example, I work as an information technology consultant and was able to apply the knowledge from this module to project estimation and controls, service level measurement and quality assurance processes. This information is also applicable to other areas and will be useful to anyone who works at a company registered as ISO-9000.
Module 5 covers all of the common quality problem-solving tools ranging from brainstorming to scatter diagrams. IT consultants and practitioners will find the sections on cause and effect diagrams and Pareto analysis useful for process improvement for defect identification and removal, and other related objectives.
Elements of a TQM system covered in module 8 may have been better placed in module 1, but it is thorough and a good starting point for anyone who is new to quality.
This book finishes with a module that provides the answers and solutions to practice problems from the preceding modules, which underscores its value as a class test or self-study guide.
I recommend this book to associates who either have never heard of SPC (and there are a lot of them) or think it is beyond their ability to grasp. It is impossible to have a viable, effective program of continuous improvement without SPC. The authors have done a remarkable job of writing a book that lives up to its title by simplifying SPC. As such they have made an important contribution to quality by making this effective tool available to anyone who will take the time to read the book and apply what they learn.

Practical guide that you can put into action right away.

SPC Simplified came along at just the right time. I needed help developing statistical analysis that I could interpret to upper management. I used this text to assist me in constructing my first run charts, variance analysis, error analysis, root cause analysis, brainstorming session and my first Process Cause and Effect Analysis. Great job. A good buy for anyone in Performance Improvement.

Control charts and Six Sigma 101

I was fortunate enough to get to go to Six Sigma Black Belt training lately and better yet, had a great teacher. However, I was not aware of how much I wasn't prepared for the class until I got there. This book certainly explains standard deviation, control charts, capability, etc. in a simple and easy to understand way. More importantly, it shows you the Deming way of doing these things to learn them...by hand and not computer. I believe this will put it in your brain and keep it there. The book has a small section of workable problems at the end of each chapter to help you learn what is being explained, very helpful indeed.
I recommend this book for anyone struggling to understand basic quality principles and process improvement principles. It helps you to collect data, calculate the data, plot the data and analyze the data.
I believe it is also a great teachers manual to help explain things in a way that will be easy to show others. We have a tendency to forget how difficult things are to understand after we understand them. This book can help you teach others with simple examples and good explanations.
Beware, this book and its content can be addicting!

About the Author

Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman is professor emerita in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. An inaugural faculty member of the Jepson School, she participated in its institution building and course development and has held positions as dean, professor of Public Administration, and Human Resource director. She has published several books and numerous articles/book chapters in the field of leadership studies. Her experience has led to invitations as presenter at the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP), Shanghai, China; the Leadership in Central Europe Conference at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic; and a panel member at international conferences in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Canada. She was a faculty presenter at the prestigious Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria and at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa where she presented a conceptual framework for leadership and transformation for regional governments in South Africa.

Unspeakably Beautifully Evil...

Once I purchased this novel, I couldn't put it down. Going through Erich's damnation and salvation through more damnation... I felt drawn in and almost as if I were the unfortunate at the hands of the doctor.

Through vivid descriptions and harrowing dialogue, the fear and terror of Auschwitz come to life. One can almost taste the air, acrid and menacing, as Erich is escorted from transport to Selektion.

Not for the faint of heart, yet at the same time exactly for those faint of heart, 19 manages to fully engage the reader as they go from chapter to chapter in this personal nightmare all the while making characters who are believable and a world one could almost... taste.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to assuage their hunger for death, despair, and a way of viewing the world that is Way Outside The Box.

I am looking forward to seeing more work become available from this author.

Exquisite and Excruciating, Beautiful and Horrific

I struggled with my review for this one. I’m not alone; other reviews have said more or less the same thing. Just to be clear – I didn’t waffle on the rating at all – this is a 5 star read, no question about it. So I had to ask myself, WTF am I struggling with here? The answer was pretty simple: I wanted to make a statement. I subconsciously wanted to address anyone that would read this book’s blurb, see the setting, view the cover, and think…what…?
…Horribly of me? I can’t imagine giving less of a care than a pro on a corner learning I had 1 bj to prove my worth *snort* So, no, not that.
…To prove the value of the prose? That speaks for itself. Much like a pro on a corner, you get what you pay for. I drooled. So, no qualms there.
…To justify the controversy? Ahh…now that’s something to consider at length. Yep. That’s been my struggle.
Back to before I’d read SF, for an indulgent moment, please…I paused before reading this. I heard about it from a Goodreads friend and saw enough comments and threads on GR topics to know that I was a wet something-er-other for what it had to offer. Still, I paused.
This book isn’t my usual cuppa – male on male medical torture porn…huh. You have me at torture, but I’m more of a M/f type and I’m a virgin in the medical toyjoy field. Still…I’m game for new *shrug* So, so far so good.
But the setting – historical, WW2, concentration camp, filled with factual events and monsters…and most importantly, most controversially…all too real victims that may have very well suffered in much the same way as the fictitious characters do– is one that had me pausing still.
I braced myself to hate this book and the author with such a fury that could only come from a myopic understanding of the history. I didn’t live through those horrors, but I am well aware (personally so) of their far-reaching impact. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I thought that those pains were exploited in any form.
So I went into the sample with a good dose of trepidation and a solid bias. I’m not one to turn from a challenge though, even one I set for myself only. So let’s just see what this little s*** did with these atrocities, more or less were my thoughts.
That is, before I read the sample. The writing is exquisite.
Yes, this is a horrifying, excruciating, and detailed description of what is recorded as one of our greatest times of evil. Yes, there are no punches pulled with the descriptions or events. Yes, the main character, Erich, is a sheltered and fragile boy in the beginning. And yes, the medical torture porn is integral to this coming of age/sexual awakening story with sadomasochism at its heart.
I loved it. I fell in love with the writing. I fell in love with the characters. Yes, both the main characters. I fell in love with their love story. That is what this is to me. I know others balk at calling it this, but I do not.
So my struggle with a review came down to wanting to make a statement, one that others might read and decide for themselves to give this book a go. Or not. So I’ll make one:
If you need to be convinced to read this book, then don’t read it. If you need to read a book that will only make you feel good or happy, don’t read it. If you shy away from the idea that love can come in the harshest of forms and under the basest of conditions, don’t read it. If you can’t accept a good deal of ugly reality with your fiction, then don’t read it. If your erotica needs to come in the form of slap-n-tickle only, don’t read it.
***If you’re open, read it. It’s worth it. Love always is, no matter the pains.***

A final note on art.
There is a museum in Berlin that uses architecture much in the same way this book uses words. I visited it on a gloomy day, not cold, not warm, perfect really.
One side of the museum is sleek and modern, jarring with its angles of white wall expanses set at odd pitches. You see, the hallways aren’t just for moving through; they’re part of the experience. No right angles exist to make for easier steps. Set into regular spots, black cubes pull attention like highrise windows, pressing closer is the only way to see the drop. Oddities and artifacts, handwritten letters and smeared postcards, everyday items and simple belongings, this is what is inside each black cube. This and a date and place of murder. This is some of what remains of generations killed by the National Socialist Party.
Moving past the cubes, there is a massive door that is opened by a museum worker; shy danke is given in various accents, or only polite nods. I couldn’t take it. I left in a rush, angered by my earlier eager politeness with the damn door. I wanted to kick it off its hinges so it could never close again.
This book did this to me. The very realism of it informed the way I felt in equal part to the imagery 19 used in creating the fictitious. Art often brings to light that which we’d rather avoid.

Adore, adore, adore. Not at all what you might expect, I promise.

I read the paperback version of Schadenfreude with the same obsessive fascination as I read the original on-line version. There are additional scenes, and a slower, more satisfying ending. This is a book I will buy over and over - because I keep giving it away, wanting all my friends to adore it, telling them this is an amazing story.

Because it is.

Unflinching horror. Unflinching love. At times there is hardly a difference between the two.

The best book I read in 2013. And 2014. And 2015.

FANTASTIC !!!

The author let me see an early manuscript of this book. This work goes well beyond The Lost Religion of Jesus in making the case that Jesus was an ethical vegetarian who sought to bring down the sacrificial system of which the Temple was the epicenter. This new book is filled with graphs and charts and laid out in a way that is remarkably easy to follow and enables the reader to hold the lines of evidence together mentally. One new piece of evidence that emerges in this book is a translation of Thomas in which Jesus looks to be a vegan! If we can date the lost gospel early and if the translation and interpretation are accurate, then we have at least one document written shortly after the death of Jesus that indicates he was vegan. This book needs to be read by all Christians, animal activists, animal lovers, ethical vegetarians, bible scholars, theologians, historians and skeptics! This highly anticipated new book could be a game changer in historical Jesus studies.

Buy this book now if you are interested in Christian origins and the historical Jesus. Keith Akers has provided us a time machine which brings us back to the beginning, to the Ebionite Jesus and his first disciples.

Akers proposes that Jesus did not institute Christianity or Ebionitism, but rather that he was the most famous exemplar of a pre-Chrstian Jewish movement that espoused vegetarianism, pacifism, compassion, and simple living. The movement had its roots in ancient Judaism, in the form of an anti-animal sacrifice group opposed to the temple. Even prophets such as Jeremiah opposed animal sacrifice, and Jesus came out of that line. His death warrant originated in his anti-sacrifice demonstration in the temple, which was far from being a "cleansing" of "the money-changers" (Luke's Gospel doesn't even mention money-changers). Instead, Jesus' main targets were those who bought and sold sacrificial animals, and of course, the priesthood at the top of the system.

Akers shows that early persecution of the Judean disciples sprang from their continued opposition to the temple sacrifices. The deaths of Stephen and of Jesus' own brother James stemmed from opposition to the sacrificial system, and were ordered not by Roman authority, but by the priesthood. The first persecution in church history thus was not one of pagans against Christians, but one of sacerdotal Judaism against anti-temple Ebionitism. "Saint" Paul has a very important historical role in this dispute and many others with which the "Jewish church" was contending, and Akers delves into this complex tangle with a scholar's incisive intellect and wit.

The book is filled with fascinating data about Essenes, Pythagoreans, Nazirites, Nazoreans, Gnostics and Chinese Nestorian Christians - all of whom are intricately linked to Ebionite history. Also the book contains helpful maps and charts.

I don't want to give away too much, because the book is very much a historical detective story and a great deal of the reader's enjoyment must derive from his/her eagerness to know what comes next, and wondering what surprise fact or (responsible, educated) speculation Akers will come up with next. Suffice it to say that Keith Akers has written a truly ground-breaking book, which carries the Ebionites' surprisingly relevant message into our own time.

A Dubious Disciple Book Review

Wow. I wish I had written this book. Speculative but convincingly argued, it strikes a perfect balance between reason and wonder, as it traces the evolution and demise of Jewish Christianity.

I have both curiosity and sympathy for the Ebionites, that early Jewish Christian sect which probably stemmed from the first Christians in Jerusalem, headed by Jesus’ brother James. Their disagreements with Paul, their emphasis on simplicity, and their primitive Christology have always intrigued me. But Akers pulls no punches in digging up the truth about the Ebionites and others. Some of their doctrine entices me, and some does not. For one thing, by the time you finish this book you may turn into a vegetarian … and life without bacon? No thanks, Keith.

In my studied opinion, Akers oversteps the bounds of reason only once–when he discusses the Talpiot tomb (the “Jesus tomb”) and its implications–but the thing is, his scholarship is so precise elsewhere that it makes me want to take a hard look at even this and see if there is really something to it! If it sounds like I’m gushing praise, it’s because this may be the most intriguing book I’ve read since discovering Paul Anderson’s Johannine studies. In a word: Disciples is simply brilliant, very highly recommended.

My one complaint is that it suffers from a scarcity of references, having no reference section or footnotes. The in-text references are not plentiful enough.
