The main parts of the book deal with : Art In Early Oceania; The Settlement of Western Oceania; Voyaging and Monumental Architecture; Art, Trade & Exchange in New Guinea; Art, War & Pacification in New Guinea; Cosmologies and Collections in New Guinea; Island Melanesuia 1700-1940; Eastern and Northern Oceania 1700-1940; War & Visual Culture; Decolonization, independence and cultural revival; Art In Oceania Now 1989-2012.

Here is a book that takes Oceanic Art seriously, but without taking itself too seriously.....and where the art is put into historical and cultural context without sacrificing how visually stunning Oceanic tribal art is. The artwork is well proportioned, often full or half-page, and includes the usual masks and figures, but also fabrics and drums and shields, and costumes and many fascinating architectural elements. A minor drawback is that some of the items featured are a little too familiar from other publications, but overall this is a marvelous book, and highly recommended. I bought my copy for under 50 bucks, which is a great value for a large, ambitious and well executed book such as this.

About the Author

Charles Krebs is Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He received his B.S. from the University of Minnesota and earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. In addition to teaching ecology for 40 years, he works extensively on the population of rodents in Northern Canada, the United States, and Australia, trying to understand the mechanisms behind population fluctuations. He has published three ecology textbooks including Ecology: The Experimental Analysis of Distribution and Abundance, Sixth Edition and Ecological Methodology, Second Edition both published by Benjamin Cummings.

Excellent Ecology Text

I am a biology student and do not usually enjoy reading text books, but this ones was an exception. Chapters are short, concise and interesting. The book is well organized and definitely helped me achieve an A in my class.

Okay text book.

I used this book for my ecology class. I found it easy to read and take notes from the paragraph but the book itself doesnt come with any study questions like most textbooks. Thats kind of discouraging because many students(myself included) use the practice or study questions in the text book to help us with our studies for upcoming exams that are based off the text book. Over all the book is great equal amount of pictures and text just the study questions that should be added by the authors are the only thing that i found wrong about the book.

Krebs has a few chapters where he didn't really write it well. But the chapters he has interest in was really good. full with details and everything. My class did run into a problem or two with a bit incorrect math. But it was no problem.

C. G. Nicholas Mascie-Taylor is Professor of Human Population Biology and Health at the University of Cambridge. His main fields of research are the inter-relationships between nutrition, growth and disease and reproductive ecology.

Robert Foley is the Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies at Cambridge University.

Nina G. Jablonski is Irvine Chair and Curator of Anthropology at the California Academy of Sciences. She edited "The First Americans: The Pleistocene Colonization of the New World "and "The Origin and Diversification of Language "(both UC Press), among other books. Her research on human skin has been featured in "National Geographic, Scientific American, "and other publications.

Kenneth M Weiss is Evan Pugh Professor of Anthropology and Genetics at Penn State University. After majoring in mathematics at Oberlin College, he received graduate training in Biological Anthropology and genetics at the University of Michigan, where he received his PhD in 1972.  He has written widely on evolutionary principles and biology, human genetics and the complexities of the relationships between genes and traits like human disease or developmental patterns.  He writes a regular column on problems and issues in evolution and genetics for the journal "Evolutionary Anthropology," and is the author of "Genetic Variation and Human Disease: Principles and Evolutionary Approaches."  He has also been a professional meteorologist.

Anne Buchanan is Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Anthropology at Penn State University.  She has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts and a DrPH in Population Studies from the University of Texas School of Public Health.  She has worked on population-scale problems in relation to health and genetics, and on molecular and developmental genetics, and has published in a diversity of areas, including anthropology, demography, epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and developmental genetics.

Extremely well written book. Make sure you are not in hurry when reading this book. The wine will add to the adventures that the author describes ... this short stories actually happened in real life.
I highly recommend this book ... a good way to open our eyes to other perspectives and see things from other minds.

Wonderful Book of Tales Living in San Diego!

I love this book! What a great idea between two people from different backgrounds who wind up together sharing really interesting and often funny tales of their lives since the day each had arrived in San Diego to stay!! I found myself relating to some of their stories which included places I have been and still go to and the restaurants most of us have frequented. Not to mention the interesting people we come across in the communities of San Diego! How funny each chapter was! The 2 authors write as if you are in the same room with them and they are personally telling you their stories. I think it is a great intro for new people in San Diego as well as a great read for all of us who have been here most or, all our lives!

Nice Legs! Nice Book!

Just finished reading “Nice Legs’ by Larry Zeiger and Jack Beddows. Fantastic reading. Not only did it recount both factual and imaginative reminiscences of the authors’ lives, but the book gave me an appreciation of wine—and how wine choice can complement one’s memories and journeys
.
My favorite was the story about George the duck. You’ve got to read it to realize how cleverly Larry relates his experience with a haute cuisine dinner to an experience as a child with his pet duck.

I can’t wait for Larry and Jack’s next book! I’d love to go to dinner with these two creative geniuses and see their creative juices flowing—and of course, the wine!

Jahrhunderts nicht geschrieben werden kann.“ Dieser Aussage Karl-Josef Kuschels über Anna Seghers´ Exilroman Das siebte Kreuz, dem wohl bekanntesten und - neben Transit - bedeutendstem Werk der DDR-Schriftstellerin soll in dieser Hausarbeit unter dem Aspekt essentieller religiöser Elemente nachgegangen werden. Dies schließt eine detaillierte Erörterung der Titelmetapher mit umfassenden Erläuterungen der Herkunft der Zahl Sieben und des Kreuzes, sowie eine Analyse ihrer Verwendung im vierten erzählerischen Werk der bekennenden Bolschewikin. Die genannte Forschungsliteratur findet in dieser Hausarbeit ebenso Relevanz, wie diverse Aufsätze und Lexikonartikel, die einen tieferen Einblick in die Komplexität der gewählten Thematik gewähren soll. ein. Abgerundet wird die Arbeit von einer Zusammenfassung mit Reflexion der ausgearbeiteten Ergebnisse. Diese Hausarbeit dient nicht der Erlangung neuer Forschungsergebnisse, sondern soll lediglich eine detaillierte Analyse der Funktionen zweier zentraler, christlicher Symbole in Anna Seghers´ Roman liefern, welche aus Raumgründen auf die oben genannten Begriffe beschränkt bleiben muss. Somit kann eine Analyse weiterer religiöser Termini, wie den Begrifflichkeiten Himmel und Hölle oder der Abendmahlthematik im Kontext des Abendessens Heislers bei der Familie Kreß nicht vorgenommen werden. Allerdings soll auf die Funktion der Zahl Sechs in ihrer Beziehung zur Zahl Sieben eingegangen werden - ein Themenbereich, welcher in der rezipierten und gesichteten Literatur nicht zum Tragen kam.
