As compared to Robbins...there's no comparison

As I am approaching the end of my 2nd year of medical school, I have studied from both Robbin's and Rubin's. I guess it all depends on how you learn. If you are someone who learns from a book that uses endless jargon and wordy, confusing descriptions of what something looks like but often doesn't even show a picture of the disease they're describing, then get Robbin's. I prefer the method this book employs, where they have pictures and pictures of both the histology of the diseases that are being discussed as well as illustrations of the pathophysiology and disease processes. I am a visual learner and found Robbin's to be VERY confusing in that explanations TELL you what something looks like, but quite often doesn't SHOW you what it looks like. That was...well...very frustrating to me to say the least. It made me wish the Robbins textbook had a face so that I could punch it.
This book, however, is great for the visual learner (which most people are. I learned that in med school :). Not only is it visual, but the explanations of the diseases and their processes are much easier to understand, especially if you don't have an extensive career in pathology, which most people don't in their 2nd year of medical school by my observation. To be fair, Robbin's does have pictures and illustrations, many of them good, but not nearly to the extent of this book.
A perfect example of the differences between these two books is in the renal section. I read it first in Robbin's and didn't know what the hell it was talking about. Then I read the chapter from Rubin's and it was like the clouds parted. The explanations made sense and, best of all, I didn't have to sit down with a medical dictionary to look up every other word.
I don't normally write book reviews, but for the life of me I can't figure out why Robbin's is the standard textbook for medical school pathology when there are better options out there. I would be just thrilled if Rubin's could become the new standard. I think the majority of students would benefit from it.

Just an amazing Path book!

As someone who frequently used the 5th edition of Rubin's Pathology, I was extremely excited to see that a new 6th edition was coming out this April. Although I read the 5th edition cover to cover and did not think it needed to be improved (except for updating old info), the 6th edition has blown me away!
Several of the chapters have been completely redone, including chapters on cell injury, neoplasia, hematopathology, neuropathology, breast pathology, diabetes, etc... Not only has the content been updated, the layout of the book has been improved a hundreds of new full color illustrations can be found on almost every page.
As a comparison with the Robbins Pathology text, I find this book superior. I think the text is easier to understand without sacrificing the details necessary to excel in medical school pathology. I think the Rubin's pictures are clearer and the charts are easier to read (They have two colors in the background to make reading across a line easy to follow). While both books probably cover relatively the same information, I feel the layout and pictures makes the Rubin's 6th edition a better buy.
The book also comes with several online features, including The Point access to the full text, over 1000 audio review questions, podcasted chapter summaries (how cool!), and over a hundred bonus case studies.
There really isn't that much more I can say about this book besides "go buy it." I feel like this book is essential for second year medical students who need a reference book throughout the year and in preparation for Step 1. As a student who got a 250+ on Step 1 using the 5th edition of Rubins, imagine how high your score could be using the improved 6th edition!

Good pictures, very poor organization

Finding anything is very difficult. At the beginning of the chapters there are great tables that show all of the topics/subtopics covered in the chapter but they reference no page numbers. To make things worse the topic section titles are turned into sentences that often times don't even contain the topics name in them. If you want to find anything in this book you have to use the index for everything. Also the pages are so thin you can see through them, and I don't mean barely see through them, you can read the words on the next page. The paper quality is literally comparable to some bibles and if you take any notes with pens/highlighters they will bleed through.
Content wise I like the pictures more in this book than in my copy of Robbins, but the way it is organized and with how thin the pages are it is hard to justify using it instead.
