From Publishers Weekly
This French bestseller by Labro, a journalist and filmmaker, is a semiautobiographical novel about a French scholarship student's adventurous year at an elite, all-male, unnamed Virginia college. In a delightfully witty style, Labro poses a traditional European upbringing against the equally narrow rituals of Southern society in 1954-55. Ignoring the similarities, the nameless narrator revels in American differences: the college's unwritten dress code, male friendships that lead to future wealth and power, the significant convertible, Fats Domino and rock 'n roll, and, of course, American women. His first relationship is with April, a black maid. In a revealing analysis of 1950s race relations, the narrator finds himself walking a thin line between his love for a forbidden woman and his desire to be accepted by segregated Southern society. In contrast, his second girlfriend is Elizabeth, a co-ed in the midst of rebelling against her monied Bostonian parents who would have her star in high society. He is unable to understand her rejection of a realm of which he has grown enamored. Labro's third novel successfully captures, through the eyes of an outsider, the essence of the American collegiate rites of passage that were all-important in the 1950s.

Tender and sincere
By J. Jacobs
Wonderful reminiscenes of a French students year at Washington and Lee. Tender and sincere, it evokes the feelings of youth, the period of the late 50's, and the characteristics of the south I experienced thirty years later. Fairly easy to understand in French.

A Look into America From Outside Eyes
By Robert Lennon
American culture from days past is sometimes interesting to look at. Nowhere can a less biased view of the 1950's be found than in the eyes of a foreigner. If that is what you seek then this is a good book. The plot kicks off pritty well. The book draws you in, bringing forth events that make you think. I reccomend reading to page 197 to anyone. Then strange things start to happen. Labro goes on for a few chapters about springtime. With the kinky/racey stuff long-gone, the reader might as well quit now. There are a few high moments before the end but it doesn't come near the intrest found in the first half. So overall I give this book a decent score because it is based on something that really happened. We can't all expect our lives to be interesting. If you're a book lover, you'll like it. If you speak french, it might amuse you. If you're looking for something more enlightening to read, try Ayn Rand.

What Planet Have I Landed On?
By PRC54
Having attended the university upon which this story is based, and being a student from the North (in those days down South, that was not much different than being from France), I can empathize with the main character's awkwardness as he enters his brave, new world in Southern Virginia. Being an outsider, in every sense of the word, takes quite an adjustment in that closed narrow-minded society, and our hero does an amazing job of attempting to fit into his new surroundings. He relishes in everything American, and transforms from a bewildered French exchange student into a red-blooded college frat boy of the 1950s. But partaking in the forbidden fruit (his affair with April, a beautiful, headstrong, intelligent young black school teacher from town) is more an act of naivete than bravery. It also has near-tragic consequences and foreshadows a bittersweet ending to the story. This novel is beyond just a period piece, but it is also a realistic look into the social fabric, politics and prejudices of the 1950s South. A quick and entertaining read.
