How to relate to geography without memorizing facts and figures

This 1937 book tells the story of how humankind is shaped by geography - where we live in the natural world and why. As with all of Van Loon's books, there are plenty of illustrations. Don't let a few out-dated names and beliefs sway the main lesson from this book - that geographic features have a major part in the story of humankind's settlements. A most enjoyable read.

I had read this book many years ago and thought my granddaughter would enjoy a presentation about a neglected subject that didn't read like a school textbook. In several respects it is dated and even factually obsolete but overall it is still interesting and quite readable.
